2015-2016 School Counselors Showcase

Event Summary

School Counselors Showcase a Huge Success!

The School Counselors Showcase was held on February 5, 2016, at the CUSD Education Center. The event was a huge success and it exceeded all expectations. Event highlights:

  • 250 parents, community members, Board members, school-site and district administrators and school counselors attended the event
  • Attendees learned about CUSD’s direct and indirect services to students in grades K-12. Direct services include: classroom guidance, school-wide activities, individual group counseling and crisis response services; indirect services include: consultations with parents and teachers, professional development for teachers and staff and parent education nights. Needs assessments are conducted by our school counselors to determine specific needs in social-emotional, academics and college and career readiness
  • Three CUSD parents spoke and described the positive impact provided by school counselors which were life-changing in their children’s lives. Participants were moved when hearing the role of the school counselor in working with selective mutism, bullying and grief
  • The Board Room was wall-to wall with information for attendees. School counselors created poster board displays describing examples of the services provided to our students and the evidence-based programs and practices utilized by our counselors to address student needs
  • Community Partners:  St. Joseph’s Health, Western Youth Services, OC Healthcare Agency, OCDE, California Youth Services, provided information to attendees
  • Breakout sessions were standing room only and included school counselors addressing the Second Step Program for grades K-8, Signs of Suicide® for grade 10, Stress and Anxiety Management for Children and Teens, and Trends in Drugs, Alcohol, and Social Media.  Special thanks to Orange County Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Woodruff, the School Resource Officer from Dana Hills High School for presenting the drugs and alcohol presentation
